Company Girl Coffee 5.4.12

Today's Small Thing is to come up with "Creature Comfort" for each of the five senses.  Since I was already going to share about our guest room here on my blog today, I decided to take the idea of having company over and run with it.

Sight: Our guest room has a new, fresh coat of paint!  We went with two colors, both in the warm grey family.  I am going to finish one of my Grandmother's old dressers to place in there and my husband is bringing home a painting to bring it all together.  Just in time to have company over this weekend!  Yay!

Smell: Chili in the crockpot for dinner tonight!  I will be making corn bread to go with it.  This meal always fills my kitchen with irresistible aromas!

Taste: Hmm...maybe I should have saved the chili for this one! :)  I'm always up for a good chocolate and I have some Frangos hidden away for a rainy day.  Yum!

Touch: Hugs and more hugs for our friends that are coming to visit!  I haven't seen them since January so they are missed and I am really looking forward to their stay.

Sound: There will be lots of laughter going on this weekend as our children play with their children and the adults visit and play board games. 

I love to play hostess and make our guests feel at home.  We've known them for years and they are like family to us.

Hospitality Matters

Whew! We got home a little while ago from having dinner at a friend's house. Two of our other dearest friends came along with their kids too. All told, there were 7 adults and 10 children. The oldest of the kids were the two 6 year old girls. What a party!

That's kind of the way I imagine it as described in the book of Acts 2:46-47 "Every day they continued to meet in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Back then, the people shared fellowship with each other all the time. They didn't wait for the right timing or for everyone's schedules to match up, or for a special occasion to gather, they just did it!

I'm so glad we all hung out tonight. It seems like we've been trying to get together forever now, but something has always come up or someone has been sick, or any number of other things that can happen when you're trying to get together with friends. I'm especially thankful for our friends that opened up their home to us and welcomed us in, arms opened wide. Hospitality is a gift from God. It is one that I want my children to learn and share. I want all who pass through my doors to feel welcome here. It is part of my goal in creating a "home sanctuary."

Company Matters

As much as I believe that routine matters, I am also working on being flexible when the situation calls for a detour from routine. This past weekend was a four day weekend for us. We decided to have family out, which is always fun. I am a hostess at heart, so the more company, the better as far as I'm concerned. It's just the day after that kills me!

As hard as I try to keep up with my normal routine when we have company, things always end up getting out of hand. Usually it's laundry. Today I will be doing a laundry marathon session! : ) What I find myself having to work really hard at, though, is patience with my kids as they come down off of their "company high". I don't know what else to call it. They get so excited about having so much attention and then it goes back to just plain old mom. That sounds terrible, I know. It's just the way it feels. It's amazing how many times I hear the words "I'm bored" after company leaves.

Today, in order to curb that boredom, I am going to plan a project. Nothing elaborate, just something fun that we can do together that will take the edge off of the company's gone blues. A distraction of sorts. It will be a nice break in routine to brighten our day here.
